What it means

What is an emergency supply?

In certain circumstances, a pharmacist may be able to provide a limited supply of your regular medicine without a new prescription. Every request is assessed individually and supply cannot be guaranteed.

Eligibility

Who can request this?

  • You have run out of regular medication
  • You cannot contact your GP, such as out of hours or on a bank holiday
  • You can show evidence of a previous prescription

Before you call

What we need from you

  • Medicine name and strength
  • Dose and how often you take it
  • Why the supply is needed urgently
  • Evidence of previous prescriptions or your NHS record
  • Your NHS number, if available

The pharmacist will make a clinical decision under current professional and regulatory requirements. Some controlled medicines cannot be supplied in an emergency.
